Can We Hear?
Romans 10:14-21

The Process of Grace

Romans 10:14-15(NASB) 14How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? 15How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!”

Hebrews 11:6(NASB) 6And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

The Proclamation of the Gospel

Romans 10:16-20(NASB) 16However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?” 17So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. 18But I say, surely they have never heard, have they? Indeed they have; “Their voice has gone out into all the earth, And their words to the ends of the world.” 19But I say, surely Israel did not know, did they? First Moses says, “I will make you jealous by that which is not a nation, By a nation without understanding will I anger you.” 20And Isaiah is very bold and says, “I was found by those who did not seek Me, I became manifest to those who did not ask for Me.”

Psalms 19:1-4(TLB) 1The heavens are telling the glory of God; they are a marvelous display of his craftsmanship. 2Day and night they keep on telling about God. 3-4Without a sound or word, silent in the skies, their message reaches out to all the world. The sun lives in the heavens where God placed it.

Romans 1:19-20(NASB) 19because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

The Patience of God

Romans 10:21(NASB) 21But as for Israel He says, “All the day long I have stretched out My hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.”

Romans: Who’s Calling?

Romans
Who’s Calling?
Romans 10:1-13

The Way Of Righteousness

Romans 10:1-4(NASB) 1Brethren, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation. 2For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. 3For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. 4For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

The Way Of Relationship

Romans 10:5(NASB) 5For Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on law shall live by that righteousness.

Romans 10:6-7(NASB) 6But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down), 7or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).”

Romans 10:8-9(NASB) 8But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, 9that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;

Romans 10:10-11(NASB)
10for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. 11For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.”

Romans 10:12-13(NASB) 12For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; 13for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Romans: God’s Choice

Romans
God’s Choice
Romans 9:6-33

Grasping God’s Rights

Romans 9:6a(NASB) 6But it is not as though the word of God has failed.

Romans 9:6-9(NASB) 6But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For they are not all Israel who are descended from Israel; 7nor are they all children because they are Abraham’s descendants, but: “through Isaac your descendants will be named.” 8That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are regarded as descendants. 9For this is the word of promise: “At this time I will come, and Sarah shall have a son.”

Romans 9:10-13(NASB) 10And not only this, but there was Rebekah also, when she had conceived twins by one man, our father Isaac; 11for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God’s purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls, 12it was said to her, “The older will serve the younger.” 13Just as it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

Romans 9:14-16(NASB) 14What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? May it never be! 15For He says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy.

Romans 9:17-18(NASB) 17For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I raised you up, to demonstrate My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed throughout the whole earth.” 18So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires.

Romans 9:19(NASB) 19You will say to me then, “Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?”

Romans 9:20-23(NASB) 20On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it? 21Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use? 22What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction? 23And He did so to make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory,

Grasping God’s Grace

Romans 9:30-32a(NASB)
30What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith; 31but Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not arrive at that law. 32Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works.

Romans 9:32b-33(NASB) 32bThey stumbled over the stumbling stone, 33just as it is written, “Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, and he who believes in Him will not be disappointed.”

Romans
Is Jesus Really God?
Romans 9:5 (NASB)

Romans 9:5(NASB)
whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

What Do People Say?

What Does God Say?

Romans 9:5(NLT)
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are their ancestors, and Christ himself was an Israelite as far as his human nature is concerned. And he is God, the one who rules over everything and is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.

Mark 14:61-64(TLB)
61To this Jesus made no reply. Then the high priest asked him. “Are you the Messiah, the Son of God?” 62Jesus said, “I am, and you will see me sitting at the right hand of God, and returning to earth in the clouds of heaven.” 63-64Then the high priest tore at his clothes and said, “What more do we need? Why wait for witnesses? You have heard his blasphemy. What is your verdict?” And the vote for the death sentence was unanimous.

John 10:31-38(NASB)
31The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him. 32Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” 33The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.” 34Jesus answered them, “Has it not been written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods’? 35“If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), 36do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37“If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.”

John 14:6(NASB)
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Romans
30—God’s Heart for People
Romans 9:1-5 (NASB)

Romans 9:1-5(NASB)
1I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit, 2that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart. 3For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh, 4who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the temple service and the promises, 5whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

Three Categories of People we are to Love
1. Love one another (other Christians—John 13:34-35)
2. Love our neighbor (people in general—Matt. 22:39)
3. Love our enemies (people who don’t like us—Matt. 5:44)

A Broken Heart

Romans 9:1-2(NASB)
1 I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit, 2that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart.

Romans 9:3(NASB)
For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh,

A Wasted Opportunity

Romans 9:4-5(NASB)
4who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the temple service and the promises, 5whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

Romans 9:4-5(TMSG)
4I grew up with them. They had everything going for them—family, glory, covenants, revelation, worship, promises, 5to say nothing of being the race that produced the Messiah, the Christ, who is God over everything, always. Oh, yes!

8 Things Israel was Privileged to Possess
1. The Adoption as Sons
2. The Divine Glory
3. The Covenants
4. The Receiving of the Law

Romans: God is For Us

Romans
God Is For Us
Romans 8:31-39 (NASB)

Five Questions Our Text Poses—Five Questions With The Same Answer:

Who Can Oppose Us?

Romans 8:31(NASB)
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?

Romans 8:32(NASB)
He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?

Who Can Accuse Us?

Romans 8:33(NASB)
Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies;

Who Can Condemn Us?

Romans 8:34(NASB)
who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.

Who Can Separate Us?

Romans 8:35(NASB)
Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Romans 8:38-39(NASB)

38For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

What Cannot Separate Us from God:

1. Death
2. Fear of life
3. Spiritual things
4. Devil
5. Present situation
6. The future

Who Can Defeat Us?

Romans 8:37(NASB)
But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.

Romans: Who’s Really In Charge

Romans
Who’s Really In Charge?

Romans 8:28-30(NASB)
28And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 29For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

Three Characteristics of God’s Work in Us:

1. The Promise

Romans 8:28(NASB)
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

2. The Purpose

Romans 8:29(NASB)
For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;

3. The Process

Romans 8:30(NASB)
and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

Five Undeniable Affirmations are Made in these Verses:
1. God Foreknew Us
2. God Predestined Us
3. God Called Us
4. God Justified Us
5. God Glorified Us

Groaning for Glorious Times Ahead
Romans 8:18-27 (NASB)

The Question Of Life

James 4:14(NASB)
Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.

Ecclesiastes 1:2-3(NIV)
2“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” 3What does man gain from all his labor at which he toils under the sun?

Ecclesiastes 1:9(NIV)
What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.

Ecclesiastes 5:10-11(NIV)
10Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless. 11As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owner except to feast his eyes on them?

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14(NIV)
13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. 14For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.

Luke 12:15 (NIV)
…a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.

The Quest Of Life

Romans 8:18-27(NASB)
18For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. 20For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. 23And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body. 24For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? 25But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it. 26In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; 27and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

John Henry Newman said, “Fear not that your life shall come to an end, but rather that it shall never have a beginning.”

We’re NOT a social gathering. God has called us to be a church.

Let’s invest our lives in eternal things, things which will never pass away, things which will usher in the Kingdom of God.
