Romans: Do We Owe the Flesh or the Spirit?

July 10, 2014, 10:34 am

Romans
Do We Owe the Flesh or the Spirit?
Romans 8:5-13 (NASB)

1. The Contrast

Romans 8:5(NASB)
For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

Two Categories of people:
I. Those who are according to the sinful nature
II. Those who are in accordance with the Spirit

Romans 8:9(NASB)
However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

Two Concerns in life:
I. The ones who are of this world have their minds, their affections, their attitudes set on the things this world has to offer
II. The ones who are born into the family of God, conversely, set their minds on the things of God and on the things of the Spirit

Romans 8:6-7(NASB)

6For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, 7because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so,

Two Conducts in mindset:
I. The lifestyle of obligation to the flesh, to fulfill its desires
II. The lifestyle of obedience to the Spirit

Two Conclusions:
I. The mind set on flesh is death … and the mind set on flesh is hostile to God
II. But the results of living according to the Spirit are life and peace

Romans 8:6(NASB)
For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace,

2. The Challenge

Romans 8:12-13(NASB)
12So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Contrast Between Two Choices:

I. First is to live according to the flesh and die
II. Second is to live by the Spirit and live

Two Commitments we have to make:
I. The first is to put to death the deeds of the flesh
II. The second is aspiration. A wholehearted giving of ourselves in thought, in energy, and in ambition to live by the Spirit

Romans
Thank God I Am Free
Romans 8:1-4 (NASB)

Sin Cannot Claim Us

Romans 8:1-2(NASB)
1Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

John 1:12(NASB)
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,

Sin Cannot Condemn You

Romans 8:3a-b(NASB)
For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin,

Sin Cannot Control You

Romans 8:3c-4(NASB)
3…He condemned sin in the flesh, 4so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Romans 8:29(NASB)
29For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;

John 5:19(NASB)
Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.

John 8:28(NASB)
So Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me.

WHAT ARE YOU WORTH?
Genesis 1:26-31
Wednesday, June 25, 2014

Genesis 1:26-31 (NIV)
26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
27 So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.
31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

Job 10:8-9 (NIV)
“Your hands have shaped me and made me. Remember that you molded me like clay.”

Psalm 139:13-14 (NIV)
“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

Proverbs 8:22-31 (NRSV)
22 The Lord created me at the beginning of his work,
the first of his acts of long ago.
23 Ages ago I was set up,
at the first, before the beginning of the earth.
24 When there were no depths I was brought forth,
when there were no springs abounding with water.
25 Before the mountains had been shaped,
before the hills, I was brought forth—
26 when he had not yet made earth and fields,
or the world’s first bits of soil.
27 When he established the heavens, I was there,
when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,
28 when he made firm the skies above,
when he established the fountains of the deep,
29 when he assigned to the sea its limit,
so that the waters might not transgress his command,
when he marked out the foundations of the earth,
30 then I was beside him, like a master worker;
and I was daily his delight,
rejoicing before him always,
31 rejoicing in his inhabited world
and delighting in the human race.

Isaiah 43:1-7
1 But now thus says the Lord,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.
3 For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
I give Egypt as your ransom,
Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you.
4 Because you are precious in my sight,
and honored, and I love you,
I give people in return for you,
nations in exchange for your life.
5 Do not fear, for I am with you;
I will bring your offspring from the east,
and from the west I will gather you;
6 I will say to the north, “Give them up,”
and to the south, “Do not withhold;
bring my sons from far away
and my daughters from the end of the earth—
7 everyone who is called by my name,
whom I created for my glory,
whom I formed and made.”

Genesis 1:28
28God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

2 Timothy 4:7 (NRSV)
7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

Psalm 56:8
8God counts your tears and stores them in a bottle.

Jeremiah 29:11
11 “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Romans: The Struggle Is With Me

Romans
The Struggle is With Me
Romans 7:7-25 (NASB)

The Discovery

Romans 7:7(NASB)
What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, “You shall not covet.”

Romans 7:8(NASB)
But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin is dead.

Romans 7:9-10(NASB)
9I was once alive apart from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin became alive and I died; 10and this commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me;

The Deception

Romans 7:11-13(NASB)
11for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. 12So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. 13Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.

Romans 7:14(NASB)
For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin.

The Dilemma

Romans 7:15-16(NASB)
15For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. 16But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good.

Romans 7:17-19(NASB)
17So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 18For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.

Romans 7:20(NASB)
But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.

Romans 7:21-23(NASB)
21I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, 23but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members.

The Despair

Romans 7:24(NASB)
Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?

The Deliverer

Romans 7:25(NASB)
Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.

Romans: Die to the Law

Romans
Die to the Law
Romans 7:1-6 (NASB)

The Principle

Romans 7:1(NASB)
Or do you not know, brethren (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives?

The Parallel

Romans 7:2-3(NASB)
2For the married woman is bound by law to her husband while he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning the husband. 3So then, if while her husband is living she is joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress though she is joined to another man.

Romans 7:4(NASB)
Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.

The Purpose

Romans 7:5-6(NASB)
For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death. 6But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.

Romans: Whose Slave Are You?

June 4, 2014, 8:06 pm

FamilyNightWeb

Romans
Whose Slave Are You?
Romans 6:15-23 (NASB)

What Are The Effects of Engaging In Sin?

Romans 6:15-19(NASB)
15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! 16Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness? 17But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, 18and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification.

1. Slavery

John 8:34(NASB)
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.

Romans 6:20-21(NASB)
20For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is death.

Romans 6:20-21(TMSG)
20As long as you did what you felt like doing, ignoring God, you didn’t have to bother with right thinking or right living, or right anything for that matter. 21But do you call that a free life? What did you get out of it? Nothing you’re proud of now. Where did it get you? A dead end.

2. Shame

Galatians 6:7(NASB)
Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.

3. Memories

Dead, and Don’t Know It

Romans 6:21-23(NASB)
21Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is death. 22But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. 23For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

“Lord, I’ll do anything you want me to, I’ll give up anything you want me to give up,
I’ll change anything you want me to change, BUT _________.” (You fill in the blank)

Romans 6:14(NASB)
For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

John 8:36(NASB)
“So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

Walking in the Spirit

May 28, 2014, 6:00 pm

FamilyNightWeb

“Walking in the Spirit with the One I love!”
Galatians 5:13-26
“For you Brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another! I say then: WALK IN THE SPIRIT AND YOU SHALL NOT FULFILL THE LUSTS OF THE FLESH! For the flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit you are not under the law!”
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

“The desire to do good alone is not enough to overcome the flesh!
We are called to “war” against the flesh as the Holy Spirit constrains us to Righteousness!

We discover victory in this battle in 3 ways:
1) Abiding in a right relationship with Jesus!(Galatians 5:25)
2) Understanding that true strength is found in our weakness! (2Corinthians 12:10)
3) Continually submitting to the unction and urging of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18)

The flesh desires to be RATIFIED, GRATIFIED, SATISFIED,
as believer’s we must learn how to appropriately regulate (control) these passions!

3 Ways the Holy Spirit makes that happen:
1) The Holy Spirit will enable war-fare against self-indulgent carnality! (Galatians 5:16-18)
2) The Holy Spirit will give discernment regarding what is unworthy! (Galatians 5:19-21)
3) The Holy Spirit will bring growth in character! (Galatians 5:22-23)

Martin Luther:
“When the flesh begins to cut up , the only remedy is to take the Sword of the Spirit, The Word of Salvation, and fight against the flesh. If you set the Word out of sight, you are helpless against the flesh. I know this to be a fact. I have been assailed by many a violent passions, but as soon as I took hold of some Scripture passage, my temptations left me. Without the Word, I could not have helped myself against the flesh!”

Colossians 3:16 (NASB)
“Let the Word of Christ richly dwell in you, with all wisdom, teaching, and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God!”

THE WORD FILLED CHRISTIAN
IS A SPIRIT- FILLED CHRISTIAN

It’s a process:
1) First we must learn to be victorious
2) We must learn to be overcomers in all of our victories
3) We must become more than conquerors!

The OBJECT OF DEPENDENCE

Romans: Death for Life

Romans
Death for Life
Romans 6:1-14 (NASB)

The Heart of True Christianity:
Our Position

Romans 6:1-3(NASB)
1What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? 3Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?

Our Provision

Romans 6:4-5(NASB)
4Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection,

Our Practice

Romans 6:6-14(NASB)
6knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7for he who has died is freed from sin. 8Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. 10For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, 13and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

What We Must Know:
Our old self was crucified
Sin’s dominion is removed
We are freed from sin

What We Must Consider About What We Know:
It’s true
It’s true for us
